In Memory of Our Beloved Author
Elizabeth Sabine, affectionately dubbed the "Auntie Mame of Heavy Metal" by NBC News, and the “Queen of Scream” by others, was a dynamic Voice Strengthening Specialist whose pioneering work transformed the vocal careers of countless singers. Renowned for her innovative techniques in restoring and empowering the voices of hard rock and heavy metal artists, she also extended her expertise to professionals across various fields, including teachers, trial lawyers, auctioneers, actors, and preachers.
Born in London in October 1923, Elizabeth's life journey took her from her childhood in Sydney, Australia—where she helped her mother craft exquisite feather flowers and earned a ballet scholarship—to her vibrant career in entertainment. She honed her talent as a singer and actress, working tirelessly to fund her tuition at the Conservatorium of Music, and gained stage experience entertaining troops during World War II. Following the war, she modeled briefly and toured Australia and New Zealand with musical productions like “Brigadoon” and “Song of Norway,” sharing stages with legends such as Helen Reddy.
In her personal life, Elizabeth was a dedicated mother, raising three sons after her marriage in 1950. Tragedy struck when her youngest son passed away at just two years old, and her husband followed shortly after, leaving her to rebuild her life from the ground up. She returned to performing, charming audiences in nightclubs and on television, including the famed “In Melbourne Tonight Show,” and took on the role of Cruise Director for Sitmar Shipping Lines, creating memorable “Love Boat” stories along the way.
In 1964, Elizabeth moved to England with her two sons, singing in working men’s clubs and running a countryside boarding house. Her adventurous spirit led her to the United States in 1974, arriving in Los Angeles with little more than two suitcases and a return ticket. There, she met Robert Mazzarella, an operatic tenor and physicist, whose revolutionary voice-strengthening methods captivated her. She became his protégé, and by the late 1970s, she recognized the potential to help rock singers recover and enhance their voices. Through meticulous research and experimentation, Elizabeth devised techniques that enabled performers to achieve powerful screams and yells without damage, revolutionizing voice training for heavy metal and hard rock artists. Her methods promised dramatic results in a fraction of the time required by traditional techniques.
Elizabeth’s reputation grew as she attracted a diverse clientele, from actors and actresses to business professionals seeking assertiveness through vocal strength. Her groundbreaking work earned her a role with Lee Strasberg’s Theatre Institute in Los Angeles, where she strengthened the voices of aspiring actors and musicians. She also shared her expertise through speech classes at UCLA Extension and seminars at Learning Tree Universities, Learning Annex, and other institutions, inspiring a new generation of voice users.
Elizabeth Sabine’s legacy is defined by her fearless innovation, unwavering dedication, and her ability to bring out the best in every voice she touched. Her vibrant spirit and pioneering contributions continue to influence the world of vocal excellence.
